Blanky Rituals

When I was a little girl, I had a blankie that I called Deedee and it was a HUGE part of my life. I mean, I loved my Deedee. I had these weird routines and self-soothing rituals I would perform with my Deedee, like folding the satin trim into a point and brushing it onto my face. I would make the satin edging (also known as the Deedee part) run underneath my fingernails and I had an amazing way of holding my Deedee crooked between my fingers, hanging down the side of my face while I sucked my thumb. I remember all of this. And now I see it developing in my own son. His blankie (unnamed as yet) was made for him by his grandma and he LOVES it. He gets giddy when he sees it. Sometimes, he’ll just be running around all hyper and crazy and he’ll spot his blankie from across the room, run over to it and bury his face in it. Just recently I noticed that he prefers holding the corner of his blankie (a specific corner, by the way) and pressing his thumb into it. It’s so cute, and also kind of disturbing in an O.C.D. kind of way. I tried to get a video of it to show you, but ended up just getting a funny one of him saying “Uh Oh” and screaming.

  1. Amber that is so cute! And what a great picture!! I had a ritual too… my blanket has holes from all the rubbing I did in my special spots. Katie has a certain corner of her blanket that she puts in her ear when she is tired. I have been trying to get a picture of it but she moves when I get the camera out. OOOhhh the rituals!
